I’ve always sketched digitally through manipulating pictures going back to the late 90’s. Today it’s called “photobashing”. It is exactly as it sounds, taking photographs and cutting, masking, rotating, and scaling them to fit together to create a new composited image. I never really thought of it as a finished product though it has been used widely in architectural visualization and concept art for quite awhile. It does come in handy for pre-visualization discussions and to alleviate creative blocks when you just can’t seem to come up with something.
I’m not sure what this scene is…. I had a few photos lying around from Colorado and started manipulating them. Halfway through, I thought it would be interesting to see a castle or ruins somewhere in the scene which then lead to the horses. I’m Not a big fan of fantasy type stuff, like at all. So it was very different to see this develop. But then again, that’s the point of sketching and doodling.
